It’s Official!

I recently posted in the News Section of this blog the official JACC paper regarding the announcement supporting the inclusion of saturated fats in our diets, importantly noting, …historical facts demonstrate that saturated fats were an abundant, key part of the ancient human diet.”

But I also came across this from Health, Home & Happiness: “Those of us who slather butter, pour cream, and thrive on red meat are no longer rebels! The Journal of American College of Cardiology just issued a revision of recommendations regarding saturated fat”:

Whole-fat dairy, unprocessed meat, eggs and dark chocolate are saturated fatty acid-rich foods with a complex matrix that are not associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The totality of available evidence does not support further limiting the intake of such foods.

Nutrition policy - it's importance moving forward

The conversation about viruses with respect to the covid pandemic must include understanding the relationship food has in terms of its impact with our body’s ability to fight off infection and recover.

Nutrition policy must be at the center of the conversation

In the coming months, much conversation will be centered around how to mitigate and prepare for pandemics like COVID-19. As we look at the death toll from this disease, reports show that many of the people who died had obesity and other related ailments including Type 2 diabetes. There’s a clear correlation between death rate and obesity and diabetes — the more severe, the higher the death rate. - Jeff S. Volek, Ph.D., R.D., Department of Human Sciences at The Ohio State University, publisher of 320 peer-reviewed articles examining health and performance effects of low-carbohydrate diets and other dietary and exercise patterns.

Apologies for sounding like a broken record, but it’s remains important to note some of the unfortunate data resulting from our government’s dietary guidelines with respect to our health and economics.

Since the U.S. Dietary Guidelines were introduced, adult obesity rates have doubled, while childhood obesity has tripled. Annual medical spending attributed to obesity nationally is nearly $150 billion, about half of which is paid to Medicare and Medicaid. And rates continue to climb. Researchers have estimated that by 2030 if obesity trends continue unchecked, obesity-related medical costs alone could rise by $48 to $66 billion a year in the United States.

The evidence is clear. If we don’t change course, many Americans will continue to follow the current guidelines that not only won’t improve their health but could make them sicker. We can alter this path by acknowledging that low-carbohydrate nutrition requires serious consideration for its inclusion in our dietary guidelines, and not merely as a footnote.

The case is urgent, and the solution is apparent. What remains is for the U.S. government to step up and safeguard public health immediately. - Dr. Jeff Volek, Ph.D., R.D.

Moving forward, for more information on recommendations for our current dietary guidelines and the committee (some representing significant conflicts of interest) who will decide the fate of those recommendations, please go to The Nutrition Coalition website for all things covering our nation’s food policy.

Whoa...Science scandal?

Many entries ago I referenced Big Pharma’s role in terms of how they benefit economically by keeping people sick (treating symptoms, not root causes) rather than encouraging doctors to help people make better lifestyle and food choices, as there is no money to be made with those choices. So today, I came across this:

The Man Behind the Breaking Science Scandal

James Todaro, MD

13 days after publishing a paper on hydroxychloroquine (a potential drug for coronavirus treatment), The Lancet retracted the study due to faulty data.  In the midst of a global pandemic, the study (that has since been retracted) was used as a basis for the guidelines set by the WHO, the CDC, elected officials, and...well, let's see how deep this rabbit hole leads us by the man who helped break the story. James Todaro, MD, played a significant role in this multi-layered scandal: By revealing the red flags of a study published by one of the world's oldest and best-known medical journals, and causing The Lancet to retract it in just 13 days.

If The Lancet’s editor and WHO (now defunded by our country) aren’t politically and economically motivated to approve (in less than 3 days!) & publish an unsubstantiated report submitted by a “reputable” doctor from a bogus “research database”, I don’t know what is!

But why?

Could it be that there is no money to be made if doctors world-wide prescribe hydroxychloroquine, a dirt-cheap medication that could potentially benefit millions - and, double bonus - its a viable way to discredit and humiliate the US President, whom they openly disagree with? For The Lancet, WHO, and the mainstream media all working together have chosen instead to malign and discredit both the affordability and theraputic benefits of hydroxychloroquine, along with the US President at the alter of their hubris. How could they resist? But don’t wait for the mainstream news to report the retraction of this article based on some of the most outrageous unsubstantiated claims in one of the world’s most prestigious medical journals.

Thank God for the research integrity, tenacity and skill of Dr. Todaro to have the bogus “out of thin air” article retracted in less than two weeks after its publication.

Please don't eat: Toxic Omega-6 seed & veg oils

While the message of the toxic effects of sugar has become more mainstream, the havoc in terms of the association of ingesting bean & seed oils (aka, soy, canola/rapeseeed, corn, cottonseed, sunflower, safflower) plays in our bodies as we age cannot be overstated.

After attending Low Carb Denver 2020, one of the speakers that stood out for me was Dr. Chris Knobbe who spoke on the following topic:

'Diseases of Civilization: Are Seed Oil Excesses the Unifying Mechanism?'

He is an ophthalmologist and Associate Clinical Professor Emeritus, formerly of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, in Dallas, Texas; and the founder and president of Cure AMD Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of vision loss from age-related macular degeneration (aka, AMD - - the leading cause of irreversible vision loss and blindness in people over the age of 65 affecting approximately 196 million people worldwide).

With respect to his expertise in AMD, he has been developing a hypothesis regarding the relationship between over consumption of highly processed omega 6 seed/veg oils (found in all processed foods and used for cooking in all restaurants), and the downward spiral these oils wreak with our overall health. As such, his current research focuses substantially on omega-6 seed oil consumption as a major unifying driver of the chronic degenerative diseases of civilization, including AMD.

By the way, the exhaustive/extensive research Nina Teicholz has written and presented on this topic (the pro-inflammatory nature of Omega 6 polyunsaturated oils), along with Dr. Cate Shanahan and Dr. Weston Price’s concurs with his hypothesis. Polyunsaturated, industrially produced seed, bean and vegetables oils do not belong in the proper human diet. Period.

Finally, here’s a great visual summary/reminder of the healthiest oils to use vs the not so good from Dr. David Jockers:

This is what covid-19 has uncovered...so far

For more than two months now, our country has been shut down in its efforts to lessen the impact on our nation's hospitals with the projected millions that were going to be deathly ill or die from the covid-19 virus. This was soon changed to stay at home and then safer at home, because as it turns out most hospitals were not overrun by any stretch. In fact, the data to date (fewer than 300,000 people world-wide have succumbed to covid-19) has not supported such Draconian measures, as the dire forecasting of millions of deaths did not occur. With all that said, it has become abundantly clear where the true epidemic lies, and that is with our own poor health which ultimately impacts our immune system's ability to fight off viruses, specifically those living with co-morbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and other diet-related diseases - which may also affect some young and middle-aged individuals who may have these pre-existing conditions not yet diagnosed.

As discussed earlier, those suffering with diabetes and obesity complications live in a constant state of inflammation surging throughout their bodies, and when a virus like covid-19 comes into the picture, the immune system in its attempt to fight off the virus, instead suffers a cytokine storm in its efforts to rally the immune system to fight it off. The end result in these scenarios often leaves these people on ventilators for extended periods, and in some cases death.

The Emerging Science Connecting Glycemic Control to Improved COVID-19 Outcomes

Abnormalities of innate immunity are classically seen in both obesity and type 2 diabetes, with marked elevation in circulating cytokines such as IL-6, serum ferritin, and CRP (C-reactive protein) which may lead to the release of TNF and IL-1, resulting in the cytokine storm seen in the end stage of COVID-19. These are precisely the cytokines found to be elevated in patients with diabetes succumbing to Covid-19 infection.

If nothing else, the covid-19 virus has exposed where our attention truly needs to be devoted: a renewed focus on the true nature of metabolic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, and how those conditions can be modified and in many cases reversed with eating real whole foods, thereby boosting our immune systems. Nina Teicholz, in this Wall Street Journal article exemplifies and espouses this message that must be given our attention:

The coronavirus has added a brutal exclamation point to America’s pervasive ill health. Americans with obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other diet-related diseases are about three times more likely to suffer worsened outcomes from Covid-19, including death. Had we flattened the still-rising curves of these conditions, it’s quite possible that our fight against the virus would today look very different.

So there you have it. Yet again, mainstream doctors and the media missing the mark in terms of where the true ‘pandemic/epidemic’ lies: Understanding why susceptible people (especially those with diabetes, obesity & hypertension) get seriously ill and/or die from viral diseases. Part of the solution is to seriously examine our nation’s food guidelines, and to examine the relationship susceptible people have with this and other related viruses.

Maria Emmerich - Author & Teacher

Maria Emmerich, author of several cookbooks, including: The Ketogenic Cookbook: Nutritious low-carb, high-fat Paleo meals to heal your body - which is one of my favorites, contributes her thoughts on how to bolster our immune system’s functioning amid the coronavirus concerns.

When it comes to COVID-19, or any virus, there is an important distinction that needs to be made. There are things you can do to prevent getting the virus. These are primarily action you take, not food, vitamins, etc. Then there are things you can do to help boost your immune function once you have a virus. None of these things will kill the virus. That is up to your immune system to fight it. Let me repeat, once you have it, your immune system has to fight it. No food, supplement or herb is going to kill it once you have it in your system.

Our immune system is our bodies defense system. It is a complex system that can either be supported, or depressed by what we eat, our lifestyles and certain vitamins and minerals. A strong immune system can be the difference between becoming very sick from a virus or having mild symptoms. Here are our tips for helping fight viruses and keeping your immune system strong.

Foods, Supplements & Lifestyle for Immune Health by Maria Emmerich:

In Brief:

  1. Consume a low inflammation, whole foods (no label foods) diet, i.e., low carb, keto, carnivore, which cuts or reduces all sugar and carbohydrates, especially processed carbohydrates (remember, all carbohydrates digest as sugar and are stored as fat).

  2. Drink bone broth. Bone broth is so medicinal that if made into a pill, the pharmaceutical companies would be broke.

  3. Salt & electrolytes are key for immune function. Several studies have shown immune benefits like THIS one that showed salt can enhance pro-inflammatory response which can enhance the clearing of invasive pathogens. It also showed that salt can affect immune cells because of its effects on the gut microbiome.

  4. Vitamins C, D, zinc, probiotics, niacin, getting adequate sleep, exercise, don’t smoke, & reduce stress.

Vitamin D and Coronavirus Disparities

Supplements may promote immunity, especially in people with darker skin

By Vatsal G. Thakkar in the WSJ

Black Americans are dying of Covid-19 at a higher rate than whites. Socioeconomic factors such as gaps in access to health care no doubt play a role. But another possible factor has been largely overlooked: vitamin D deficiency that weakens the immune system.

Researchers last week released the first data supporting this link. They found that the nations with the highest mortality rates—Italy, Spain and France—also had the lowest average vitamin D levels among countries affected by the pandemic.

Vitamin D is produced by a reaction in the skin to the ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Many Americans are low in vitamin D, but those with darker skin are at a particular disadvantage because melanin inhibits the vitamin’s production. As an Indian-American, my skin type is Fitzpatrick IV, or “moderate brown.” Compared with my white friends, I need double or triple the sun exposure to synthesize the same amount of vitamin D, so I supplement with 5,000 international units of vitamin D3 daily, which maintains my level in the normal range. Most African-Americans are Fitzpatrick type V or VI, so they would need even more.

This requires further study, but earlier research is suggestive. In 2018 a longitudinal study by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital looked at whether vitamin D supplementation had any health benefits, specifically in regard to heart disease and cancer. The overall conclusion was that it didn’t, for most people. Yet buried in the results was one that should have made headlines: Vitamin D supplementation in African-Americans reduced cancer risk 23%. How? Cancer cells develop regularly in most animals, including humans, as the result of toxic injuries or glitches in DNA replication, but a healthy immune system destroys them. There is evidence that low vitamin D levels make the immune system go blind.

Dozens of studies confirm that deficiency is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which disproportionately afflicts African-Americans. A major contributor to heart disease is inflammation that targets blood vessels, forming the plaques that block blood flow. (Raising vitamin D levels with supplements hasn’t been shown to reverse this effect.)

Black Americans are also twice as likely to develop Type 2 diabetes as whites. Here, too, we find an immune connection. Insulin resistance, the harbinger of Type 2 diabetes, appears linked to high levels of circulating cytokines, the same pro-inflammatory proteins implicated in Covid-19 mortality. Many scientists are coming to view Type 2 diabetes as an autoimmune disorder, like Type 1.

History can also be a guide. A 2009 study examined sun exposure and fatality rates during the 1918-19 Spanish flu pandemic, which killed an estimated 50 million world-wide. Disparities in access to health care were minimal then, since treatment consisted mostly in supportive measures and convalescence. Antivirals, vaccines, intensive-care units and ventilators didn’t exist.

The U.S. erected emergency hospitals—one of which, the Camp Brooks Open Air Hospital in Massachusetts, had the unique distinction of being an outdoor recovery unit. The mortality rate for patients there fell from 40% to 13% when they were moved outside. Sunlight might have proved to be literally the best disinfectant.

Remember…. get some sun and/or supplement with D3/K2!

More on how to help our Immune Systems - the Importance of Resilience!

To continue to adopt and spread the message regarding building a strong immune system, especially in light of COVID-19, “Good Morning America”, aka GMA interviewed Dr. Jason Fung and one his co-authors Eve Mayer regarding the health benefits of intermittent fasting in their latest book, “Life in the Fasting Lane.” AND, he was also featured on Canada’s The Morning Show.

Finally! This important message is hitting MSM.

This message reminded me of yet another recent podcast with Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai, MIT PhD who is on a ‘health & awakening’ quest to help people understand the amazing strength of our bodies with respect to our immune system, which is essentially our body’s operating system (think ‘systems engineering’). When your body is healthy/in good shape, it takes care of itself, aka ‘homeostasis’, and gains much of its strength from how resilient it is - but only if it learns to cope with stress, aka, ‘stress inoculation’ (i.e., exercise, fasting) - especially if it has access to good food and constructive environmental habits.

To that end, he sent a letter/petition signed by thousands to the President outlining the problems with Dr. Fauci’s recommendations, with ways to mitigate the current health crisis - including the removal of Dr. Fauci, who has numerous conflicts of interest with big pharma, making significant money as a result of those ties, and who utilizes a ‘one size fits all’ approach rather than a personalized health/medical (systems) approach based on individual needs.

What you can do to help your immune system

There are very popular diets that will cripple your Immune System’s ability to fight off bacterial and viral infections. Many gurus & pundits [of high carbohydrate diets] refuse to believe that eating certain foods, and avoiding processed foods, can have a major impact on the health of all your cells, including the cells of your immune system.

This video by Dr. Ken Berry will tell you exactly how these foods and popular diets worsen your immune response, and what you can do to correct this by consuming a proper human diet.
